Earlier this month, I asked you to join me in renewing our party. But what does renewal look like? How do we start?
In five years' time we will look back on now as the crucial time, when we either
• Made the hard choices to return to serving our country again
OR
• Allowed the Labour Party to fundamentally change our country while we fought the last war.
We have to turn ourselves around quickly. Here's how we start renewing.
First, we renew by speaking the truth. We lost confidence in ourselves and in Conservative values. We did not say what needed to be said, because we were worried about upsetting the status quo. We have to be honest about the problems and honest about our failures.
Second, we renew by being a team again. Our party lost its way because we relied too much on the leader to do everything and didn't listen to members. We must do this together and that starts with engaging our party members. No more managerialism. No more trusting bureaucrats instead of the people.
I've been all around the country listening to members about why we lost and what we do next. You've told me that people don't know what we stand for or who we are anymore. I agree. I want to provide leadership - but I cannot do this alone.
